Meryl Streep, currently the cinema in "The Iron Lady", talks about her role as Margaret Thatcher, its preparation and its views on this highly controversial political figure.
AlloCiné: What kind of research did you do to embody Margaret Thatcher? For this performance is much more than appearance, there is also the game, posture ...
Meryl Streep: I watch a lot of archival images, and for me, the biggest challenge was to set out the long speeches she used to do, without even taking a breath. Even with all the training I had during my training, I had a hard time doing that.
And this had an impact on who she was as a person, his way of galvanizing people, his ability to speak with conviction, without stopping, without taking a breath. And the fact not to let anyone cut him off. She had a great mastery of interviews. And I take note also.
AlloCiné: Do you prefer playing people who really existed or fictional characters where interpretation may be more free?
Since almost 40% of the film, I read a Margaret Thatcher that nobody has ever seen or that nobody could know, we took an imaginary path. So I felt a lot of freedom. I felt very free, thanks to the choice of director (Phyllida Lloyd) and his bias was to show that three days in the life of an old lady, and one of "turmoil" it crosses-duty empty the closets of her deceased husband, as a trigger of his memories, to be disoriented, and make back and forth between his past and present.
AlloCiné :When you agree to interpret a person who is still alive (unlike Julia Childs, for example, you have embodied in Julie and Julia), is what you have in mind that the person could see this movie and comment ?
Yes. I have not met Margaret Thatcher, however. I saw her once at the university of my daughter, at Northwestern. We attended a lecture she gave, and this has left an indelible mark with me. That was in 2001 or 2002, I can not remember exactly. But to answer your questions about the responsibility that this represents to play someone who is still alive, and who could potentially see the movie, we were criticized because we have painted a picture of someone in fragile and a delicate state of health. Some people said it was shameful to show this part of life, but at the same time, if people think that dementia, mental fragility are shameful, if people think it should be cut out pictures showing someone an end of life, then that is what is unfortunate is shameful! I do not think we should get cut. I've known people with dementia, I understand this situation, and this is natural.
We are naturally interested in our leaders, and through their history, it says things about us. (...)
AlloCiné: Have you met his daughter, that is to say the author of the book that inspired the film?
No.
You said you admired the fact that Margaret Thatcher was not afraid to be in power and she knew lead. This seems harder to run when you're a woman, especially in the field of politics. Can you comment?
I am impressed by everything that could have prevented reaching the head of his political party and then run the country, and become that which has held the post of prime minister as long as the twentieth century. There were so many obstacles before it, and I think she did a service to "our team" (that of women, Editor's note) in arriving at this position. Even if you are perhaps not agree with his political beliefs, there is his determination, his energy, his courage to continue ... I think a person who rises and who seeks to be in power, with its training and intelligence, is admirable on some level, because you make many sacrifices. All people are the public.
AlloCiné: I heard that you spend 4 or 5 hours a day for makeup.
No, it was less than 2 hours.
You were afraid that with a character that required much makeup that it devalues your performance, or even become the performance?
When we were developing the character of old Margaret, much has been removed from layers of makeup. The designer Mark Coulier has done wonders. He managed to create something the thickness of the skin, so I felt very free to move. I had the impression of watching a specific family member, or even myself, and that made my game easier.
